Shoulder impingement syndrome is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain. In other words, this condition is also known as shoulder impingement. In recent years, it has also been referred to as subacromial impingement syndrome.

Shoulder impingement occurs particularly when the arm is raised above shoulder level. It involves one of the four rotator cuff tendons—specifically, the supraspinatus tendon—becoming compressed under the bony structure called the acromion. Repetitive or prolonged compression leads to inflammation and swelling of the shoulder bursae, causing pain.

What Is Shoulder Impingement Syndrome?

Shoulder impingement syndrome develops when the soft tissues in the shoulder joint become compressed. It typically causes pain and restricted motion. One of the hallmark signs is pain felt when lifting or straining the arm. Repetitive shoulder movements and poor posture may trigger this condition.

The supraspinatus tendon—part of the rotator cuff—passes beneath the acromion bone located at the top of the shoulder. In some individuals, the space between the acromion and the humeral head (the subacromial space) is narrower than normal.

    Physical Therapy for Shoulder Impingement

    Can Shoulder Impingement Heal on Its Own?

    Shoulder impingement symptoms may improve with rest and exercise in some cases, but spontaneous recovery is rare. Because the root of the issue often lies in structural problems, surgical intervention is sometimes required.
