padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">The acromioclavicular (AC) joint is the joint between the collarbone (clavicle) and the extension of the scapula (acromion), often referred to as the shoulder&#8217;s small joint. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block2\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-1ta2d\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">The AC joint is held in place by extremely strong ligaments, called coracoclavicular ligaments. These consist of two separate ligaments, the trapezoid and conoid ligaments. They are the most important structures that keep the AC joint in place, especially in an up and down direction. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block3\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-2ag02\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">AC joint injuries are common in athletes such as cyclists, skiers, and football players. These injuries usually occur by falling onto the upper part of the shoulder. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block4\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-aj7jh\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">When you fall onto your shoulder, one possible injury is the tearing of these two ligaments, causing your collarbone to displace upward from the AC joint.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block5\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-askao\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\">\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block6\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-6gvd9\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">AC joint injuries are graded according to the severity of the injury. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block7\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-4bk2k\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\">In grade 1 and 2 injuries,<\/strong> the ligaments are strained and slightly damaged, causing moderate shoulder pain. These injuries generally heal with non-surgical methods like ice, rest, medications, and temporary use of a sling. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block8\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-79kga\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Grade 3 and 4 injuries <\/strong>denote more severe damage to the ligaments. Surgery is required to eliminate shoulder pain and restore shoulder function in those who sustain these injuries.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block9\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-3j40m\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"> The aim of this surgery is to reposition and secure the collarbone back to its original location in the joint. To fix the joint in the correct position, I primarily use a very robust rope system called tightrope, which has buttons on both ends. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block10\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-1ki8\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block11\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<div id=\"viewer-36m2i\" class=\"_42tfF\">\n<div class=\"_16CGD abqz1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block12\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-flqa3\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe _6XZJW UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\">\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block13\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-aaem8\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">If the injury is very fresh, this surgery can be performed arthroscopically, i.e., minimally invasively.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block14\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-dj1ak\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\">\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block15\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-bsce9\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\">After surgery, it may be necessary to stay in the hospital for one night for pain control. The arm sling is used for about 2 to 3 weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-hook=\"rcv-block16\"><\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"normal\">\n<p id=\"viewer-1sqei\" class=\"_04qQG jtShe wGvE1 UGHSE\" dir=\"auto\" style=\"padding-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"mVzZr\"> The surgery gives quite good results if it is performed within 3 weeks after the injury.
