First-degree injuries can often go unnoticed. MCL injuries frequently occur in conjunction with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. They most commonly result from a blow to the outer side of the knee. Symptoms of MCL injuries include pain on the inner side of the knee (the side facing the other knee), swelling, difficulty walking, and in severe third-degree injuries, knee locking.
